BITOLA

“Monastir is a distinguished city, adorned with elegant buildings, lively markets, and noble streets.”
— Evliya Çelebi, Seyahatname

Today known as Bitola, this historic city has long stood at the crossroads of cultures, empires, and ideas. Once an important Ottoman administrative and cultural center, Monastir carried a cosmopolitan character where merchants, diplomats, scholars, and travelers shaped its vibrant urban life.

Walking through Bitola today, traces of that rich past are still visible. The elegant façades along Širok Sokak, the old consulates, mosques, churches, and public buildings reflect centuries of movement and exchange. It is a place where architecture and memory quietly preserve the stories of a city that once connected East and West.

Bitola remains a city shaped by passage; where history, culture, and everyday life continue to meet in one of the most remarkable towns of the Balkans.
