SKOPJE

Skopje is a city shaped by centuries of movement, empires, and cultures. Standing along the banks of the Vardar River, it has long been a meeting point of civilizations where East and West intersect. Roman ruins, Ottoman bazaars, modern buildings, and monumental squares coexist in a landscape that reflects the complex history of the Balkans.

Walking through Skopje, one can easily sense the layers of its past. The old stone Stone Bridge connects the historic Old Bazaar with the newer parts of the city, symbolizing the continuity between different eras. Nearby, the vibrant Old Bazaar preserves the atmosphere of an Ottoman market, where narrow streets, mosques, and traditional shops recall centuries of trade and cultural exchange.

The Nobel Prize–winning writer Ivo Andrić, who often reflected on the history of the Balkans, once wrote:

“Of all that a man builds in his life, nothing is better and more valuable than bridges.”

Few places illustrate this idea better than Skopje. Bridges, markets, and monuments all tell the story of a city that has endured wars, earthquakes, and transformation, yet continues to stand as a living crossroads of cultures.

Skopje today is both historic and evolving; a city where the past remains visible, and where the spirit of the Balkans continues to shape everyday life.
